May 1, 2012 — The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Foundation today announced honorees of the 2012 Pinnacle Awards. The Pinnacle Awards, established in 1998 by the APhA Foundation, celebrate significant contributions to the medication use process through increasing patient adherence, reducing drug misadventures, promoting the use of national treatment guidelines, improving patient outcomes or enhancing communication among the members of the health care team. April 4, 2011 — Medical professionals as well as consumers often don't realize that some prescription and over-the-counter drugs can lower nutrient levels in the body. In some cases, this can be significant. Cholesterol-lowering drugs like atorvastatin can lower coenzyme Q10 levels by more than 50%. Prilosec or Nexium sometimes cause severe magnesium depletion. November 15, 2010 — In its ongoing efforts to reduce adverse drug events, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is requiring that particular drugs be subject to the REMS (Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy) program. Drugs that are characterized as "REMS" drugs typically require that the physician and pharmacist successfully complete a specific training course prior to prescribing or dispensing the drug. September 10, 2009 — Pharmacist's Letter unveiled the National Preceptor Database to serve the needs of stakeholders with an interest in pharmacy precepting. The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) requires each school of pharmacy to provide documentation of completed training for every preceptor affiliated with their school. Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database Launches Natural MedWatch for Adverse Event Reporting.
March 22, 2008 — The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) uses its MedWatch program to collect reports of suspected adverse events related to drugs, vaccines, and medical devices. Medical professionals, manufacturers, and patients are all encouraged to submit voluntary reports to FDA's MedWatch program when an adverse event is suspected. By collecting these data, FDA researchers as well as other researchers, are able to identify significant problems and trends that would not otherwise be detected. It is only through the watchful eyes and careful reporting of millions of health professionals and patients that some problems come to light that would otherwise remain unidentified. September 10, 2007 — By some estimates there are approximately 50,000 preceptor pharmacists in the United States who provide real-world education and training to student pharmacists. These Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPE) and Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPE) are required by the accreditation agency that accredits each school of pharmacy in the United States.
